Review: Equifit T-Foam Curb Chain Cover

One of my favorite things about riding is finding training and equipment solutions to our little bumps in the road. Most of the time it's a long process of incrementally improving our riding and communication with our horse. Once in a great while, however, we find a piece of equipment that makes our partners' jobs easier.

One product that I discovered and have been using unconventionally is the Equifit T-Foam Curb Chain Cover. While The Pony and I love love love her Micklem bridles, the underside of the noseband does not have any padding. Since The Pony is rather sensitive on her face (many horses are), I wanted to make this part of the bridle more comfortable for her since even when adjusted correctly I didn't like the way the edges of the leather were rigid against her chin.

I started searching for ways to pad the underside of the nose band. Vet wrap looked tacky, got dirty easily, and had to be replaced regularly. I also did not want to show with vet wrap on my bridle. Guess I'm a snob like that. Same issues with wrapping the nose band with latex, but stickier.

After browsing my favorite online tack stores, I found the Equifit T-Foam Curb Chain Cover on SmartPak and decided to give it a try.

Using our Equifit T-Foam Curb Chain Cover during a dressage test at Shepherd Ranch

Yes, the curb chain cover is meant for use on a curb chain, but the length and width are perfect for preventing rubbing and discomfort for the underside of the Micklem bridle nose band. I'm very happy with how it helps The Pony be even more comfy in her Micklem bridles. I use it on The Pony's dressage and jumping bridles, and even with bit guards on her jumping bridle the cover fits well.

The Equifit curb chain cover is very easy to clean and the quality is excellent. I use a mild soap and warm water to hand wash the curb chain cover. After air drying it looks brand new.

The stitching and the softness of the gel padding is pristine after 5 months of daily use. I got tired of switching the curb chain cover between my dressage and jumping bridles, so I bought another one about a month ago. In comparing the new cover to the old one the squishiness is the same, which makes me optimistic about the longevity of this product.

I was worried the Equifit curb chain cover wouldn't look polished enough for shows, but after seeing photos it looks neat and tidy. At one of our clinics with Michael Lieberg, he even commented that the curb chain cover was a nice solution to make The Pony more comfortable.

After using one Equifit product and being very impressed with the quality I decided to also purchase an Equifit half pad a couple months ago, which I will review after riding with it a bit longer.

With bit guards, the Equifit curb chain cover is
extremely discreet on our jumping bridle.

Until next time, happy riding! 🐴
